Cafe Barcelona presents two evenings of live REBETIKO.
Rebetiko is the “underground” music from mainland Greece, with early influences from Smyrna from the 1920s onwards. It is sometimes referred to as the “Greek Blues” and was made illegal due to the controversial themes of it’s lyrics. Over a 30-year period it also absorbed influences from American swing, Latin and Indian music, creating a rich and varied repertoire of songs and dances.
For this event we will have two fantastic singers:
Friday 19th Dec with CIGDEM ASLAN
accompanied by
Pavlos Carvalho: bozouki
Pavlos Melas: guitar
Saturday 20th Dec with KATERINA CLAMBANEVA
Pavlos Carvalho: bozouki
Manolis Taouxis: bozouki
Sarah Carvalho-Dubost: guitar
Tickets: £12 ADV (£14 on the door)
Tickets available at the cafe or calling at 02087 699169
Doors open at 7pm, show at 8.30pm
Wines & Tapas available on the night
Join us for an evening of soulful Fado music from one of it’s most exciting young singers and her band (the artist’s name is a surprise).
Fado lies at the heart of the Portuguese soul, deeply expressive yet highly lyrical. It could be the world oldest urban folk music, arriving perhaps as a dance from Africa, or maybe form the sad songs of homesick sailors.
Whatever its origins, its themes are constant – destiny, betrayal in love, loss, longing and yearning that can’t be satisfied.
Our singer has appeared at WOMAD Festival and has recently performed at the BBC3′ Radio sessions “Live at the South Bank Centre”.
Wines and tapas available on the night.
Tickets £12 ADV or £15 on the door. No reserve. Tickets on sale at the cafe or calling 020 8769 9169.
